Five interior design accessory tips

When it comes to interior design, it can be the little things, the minor details, the finishing touches that matter the most.

Whether you’re selling your home and showing people around, letting a property out, or simply want to make the most of living in your family home, accessories can help turn an insipid and dowdy interior into a stylish living space brimming with inspiration.

That said, going overboard with accessories can make a home feel crowded, fussy and cluttered.

To give you a helping hand when it comes to accessorising your home, take a look at the following five interior design accessory tips.

  • Make it seasonal

There’s nothing quite like bringing a taste of the season indoors to add some seasonal spark to an interior.

We have to admit, autumn can be one of the best times to introduce some seasonal décor to your home. Hold no bars in lighting autumnal-scented candles or hanging beautiful autumn garlands infused in warming reds, yellows, browns and oranges across your mantlepiece this autumn.

  • Combine colour and textures

If your interior is essentially neutral, vibrant accessories that contrast with the neutrality of the décor through colour and texture, can be a great way to bring an interior to life.

By the same token, bright interiors can be toned down through more neutrally themed accessories to provide additional visual interest and contrast within the same space.

  • Avoid clutter

Too many ornaments, paintings, bric-a-bracs, antiques and more, can make a home appear cluttered, as the eye has too many things to look at and focus on.

While accessories should be generously positioned around the home, avoid an accessory overload, particularly in certain rooms like kitchens and bathrooms that have a function and would get in the way.

  • Pile on the cushions

Cushions are a fantastic accessory in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and other living spaces. By simply changing an old cushion for a new one can be one of the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective ways to breath fresh life to a room, providing new colours and patterns to a living space.

  • Display more art

The great thing about artwork is that there are no rules. There’s no need to spend a fortune on original artwork with a six-digit price tag. Instead, display artwork that means something to you and your family, whether it’s art your children have created, or a piece produced by a local artist.

Don’t hold back in displaying colourful, unique and vibrant artwork to bring your interior to life.
