Teenage bedroom ideas to satisfy even the obstinate of youngsters

A bedroom is everyone’s personal space where visitors and off-bounds and we can relax alone. This is especially true in a teenager’s bedroom, where many parents often only enter if they dare! The good news is that with a little creativity and interior design acumen, you can create a bedroom to satisfy even the most obstinate of teenagers. Here’s how.

Opt for furnishings centred on your teenager’s hobbies and interests

Is your son fanatical about guitars? Or is your daughter football-mad? Whatever your teenager is into, there’s bound to be furnishings available that cater to their hobbies and interests. Whether it’s a bedspread adorned in punk rock symbols, or a headboard in the shape of a football, introducing elements of their interests into their bedroom is almost guaranteed to put a smile on their face. The trick is not to go overboard with the hobby-themed décor, as that could backfire by making a sensitive youngster embarrassed by their room. We know how touchy they can be!

Devote a wall to schoolwork

They might hold their nose initially, but many teenagers will actually appreciate having a space dedicated to their schoolwork. From their latest art creation, to their lesson and homework timetables, pinning schoolwork and reminders on a dedicated wall is a practical and fun way to help teenagers engage in their schoolwork.

Get a good balance between youthfulness and sophistication

It’s a strange time, teenage years, when you’re torn between being a child and an adult. Ideally, a teenager’s bedroom should get the balance right by combining mature and sophisticated décor, such as neutral tones and textured wallcoverings, with more playful, youthful elements, such as a shelve for timeless objects they loved when they were younger, or a comic rack.

Decorate with mature colours

Pink pastels might have worked when your daughter was seven, but doesn’t quite work now she’s 17! Mature colours like dark greys and muted greens can be welcomed in a teenager’s bedroom and can be a great background to highlight elements such as their artwork or favourite photos.

Built-in bookshelves

No teenager’s bedroom should be without a bookshelf. Fill the shelf with their favourite books, from classics when they were little to what they’re working on in school, which will, hopefully, encourage them to read.
